by | Mar 14, 2022 | FASHION, FASHION DOCUMENTARY, TOP STORIES

Still in the month of celebrating women, we are taking out time to celebrate one of the most influential women in the fashion industry who has put Nigeria on the map through her hard work and consistency in the fashion space.

Over the years, fashion has evolved tremendously and is still evolving, globally and Nigeria is not exempted. Nigeria’s fashion industry has grown so big and has gained international attention and interest. There are people behind this; people who have worked so hard to expand the fashion space and are still working to take it to a greater level.

We have women in this industry who have contributed to the expansion and today we are celebrating one out of many of them. We are celebrating Deola Sagoe.

Deola Ade-Ojo also known as Deola Sagoe is an award winning haute couture fashion designer. According to the house of deola (deolasagoe.co), She began designing in 1988 when she joined her mother’s business with a view of expanding the label’s repertoire to encompass more contemporary designs for the ever-developing, cosmopolitan high-brow society. Using African hand-woven materials in which she brought to life a range of distinct cultures; and contemporizing almost-lost traditional African techniques, Deola quickly became an icon in her field. Deola is well known for her uncanny attention to detail, her expert handling of a diverse range of fabrics as well as her exemplary grasp of a wide range of female body types. She is celebrated back home for her patriotism and zeal in Nigerian culture at large. Her ingenuity and innovativeness combined with strong business acumen and vision has seen her win various accolades, awards, and recognition over the years.

Celebrating the women in the fashion industry is incomplete without mentioning Ms Deola who is one of the fore-runners of the fashion industry in Nigeria.

In 2001, she was rated number 37 on the African Almanac scale of 100 most influential Africans in the world. In 2007, she was recognized at the 10th International Star Awards in Paris and merited the Platinum Quality Award for her superior clothing. In 2008, she was awarded the International Quality Award (in the diamond category) of Excellence and Business prestige at the Quality Summit in New York. She has won multiple awards and recognition.

And in 2014, Deola became the first Nigerian to have her own stand-alone show at the New York Fashion Week.

We celebrate every other woman who has in one way or the other contributed to the expansion of Nigeria Fashion Industry.
